In the late 18th century, Franciscan missionaries and soldiers observed that wildflower pastures carpeted the land all the way from San Diego to San Francisco. A century later, John Muir lamented “plows and sheep have made sad havoc in these glorious sweet bee pastures.” By the end of the 20th century, invasive European grasses had overrun almost all that was left of California’s wildflower meadows.

Wildflowers Forever, a non-profit natural lands conservancy based in Nevada County, aims to preserve the remnants of the Sierra Foothills wildflower flora within a regional nature preserve which will be open to the public for passive recreation, environmental education, and community stewardship activities.
